The Martian Alternate Poster
Another alternate poster, this time The Martian. Good flick and much funnier than I thought it'd be.

Star Wars 7 Alternate Poster
With only a week to go till it comes out, I thought Id have a crack at an alternate poster for Star Wars 7. Not the most genius idea in the world but it was fun drawing the lightsabre.
I also did a version using the Star Wars yellow/orange but prefer the first version.
I was telling a friend of mine about the first time I saw Star Wars and he thought it was funny so I thought I'd blog about it.
My parents are very religious people. What that meant was, they were very uneasy about films (and a whole bunch of other things), the message, the values, that sort of thing. Swearing, of course, was a big problem too.
When it came to Star Wars they couldn't get their heads around it. Mostly I think it was about "What's this Force stuff? .. it doesn't sound very christian." - so we weren't allowed to see it.
Meanwhile all my mates at school were watching it 14 times, had all the toys and the rest of it. I was still into it, there's no way you couldn't be, but actually I had no idea what it was really all about.
After a full year of us trying to convince my parents to let us watch it, they finally started to soften. Friends of theirs had seen it and so had their kids. It's all a bit fantastical but it's not really a problem. So after a full year since it originally came out we were finally allowed to go see Star Wars. The problem was, it'd been out so long by then, it wasn't in cinemas anymore (and back then films stayed in cinemas for ages). The only place that was still showing it was the drive in.
So that's how I first saw Star Wars. In a station wagon, parents in the front seat, four kids in the backseat trying to look past their heads. All that effort that was put into the soundtrack and sound effects was all diminished down to a mono track, crackling speaker hanging from the front passenger seat window (!!) and I kid you not, it also started to rain! Not for the entire film but at certain parts we also had the windscreen wipers going while the screen was way off in the distance.
Not quite the cinema experience it was intended to be.

Usually the Bear Eats You
"Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you" is an old frontier saying that features in the film The Big Lebowski.

Enlightened yet fat
I showed a friend of mine this and he thought it was funny but didn't know why. I guess there's a bit of a play on words there, if you take the "light" from enlightened and put it up against the "fat". I dunno, maybe it's just that the "fat" is kinda abrupt.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
A mash up of The big Lebowski, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and a bit of Fargo thrown in too.
Another one, this time combining The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with Breaking Bad ... so The Good, the Breaking Bad and the Ugly.
Both available on T-shirts at Design by Humans (click link below)

Mad Max Fury Road Alternate Posters
Being a big fan of alternate posters, I of course wanted to try it for myself. For me, Mad Max Fury Road has been the standout film of the year. So visual, other-worldly, exciting. So many things not explained but if you think about it for a while it all makes sense.
What I love about alternate posters is they're often minimalistic and stronger for it. Saul Bass is clearly an influence on a lot of them. They're striking and often have a good idea behind them or nutshell the film in a simple but strong image. Olly Moss is very good at it, a great designer and I love his work. There are others as well.
Mine feel quite simple but I enjoyed doing them.

A mate of mine had a look at them and while he said he liked them he thought the Furiosa one was the weakest link. Also I realized she really should have her prosthetic arm included since it's such a distinguishing feature of hers.
I had another attempt and while I like the result it doesn't sit as well with the first ones. It's a bit like a cousin to to the others. Anyway, it's just for fun.

Danny Trejo
This is also not a drawing of me .. it's Danny Trejo, although I've been likened to him more than once.
I shld be so lucky .. I wish I was half as hard as this bloke.
Iggy Pop
A lot of people think this is a drawing of me. It's not, it's Iggy Pop, who must be a good 10 (probably 15) years older than me which a little disconcerting. Still, I often use it as my profile pic.

New biz card
I figure a good place to restart this blog is with my new biz card. I'm very happy with it. First of all it was designed by my wife Cat so people that like to give me shit about stuff can't really do it because they'll be criticising her not me.
Also I like the colours - and that the design is nice and clean and strait to the point.
Most of all I like the joke and it makes it very locally HK. In HK when you give someone your biz card (or credit card, lai see, sometimes money) you always hold it in two hands with the thumbs on top as you hand it over. The person receiving it will, in turn, take the card with two hands much the same way and then they'll always look at it and clock the information on it 's (it's considered polite).
So the markings at the top of the card are deliberate - and yes, they're my actual thumb prints! We stamped them, then scanned them in.
