Lydia Ko caricature

Have been working on a poster for the Rio Olympics for my old newspaper the South China Morning Post. Basically it's caricatures of the top contenders for gold medals for the upcoming games.

It comes out next week but here's a sneak preview of Lydia Ko.

Frank Black

Hearing the news that there's a new Pixies album on the way prompted me to do a quick caricature of Frank Black (no it's not Hank from Breaking Bad).

Great band, great new single
Um Chagga Lagga. Bring on the album.

Btw I love the way they always (or at least, often) say the Pixies music is "surf music".  What the hell is "surf music"? And have a look at this bloke. I'd be surprised if he cld swim 50m doggie paddle let alone get a board out the back. Never surfed in his life. That said, I love them to bits.

Si Yajie and Sod's Law

At the moment I'm working on a poster for the Rio Olympics.

It was going to be caricatures of the top 14 gold medal contenders but they decided to cut it back to 10. While I was waiting for them to cut back the list, I thought I'd make a start. Since this is HK, I figured it'd be safe to do the Chinese athletes. Of course I was wrong and the one's I started on were dropped.

Annoying, because I lost the jump on the job I was hoping for (which for some reason is a rush job. I guess the Olympics are like the Spanish Inquisition .. "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition" .. except the Olympic Games happen every four years and have done so since 1896). More annoying tho is that the ones I started on were kind of working out. This one of Si Yajie, for example, is just the early stages but I'm happy with the look and feel of it. Ithink it would've turned out pretty well and I'm a bit bummed she won't be in the poster (I might finish her off just for the hell of it when I finish the rest).

I hope she wins tons of gold medals and becomes the darling of the Rio Games (and they want to commission a commemorative caricature poster of her).

Oliver Hardy

It wouldn't be right to do Laurel without Hardy .. so here he is.

The drawing's a bit tight, but whatever. It's a bit dark in places too. I'd put a bit more time into it except I have other things I need to get done. Maybe I can revisit it later. (Doubt I will)

Possibly the best "DO NOT" sign of all time

"Do not jump cars with your motorcycle"?

Update. I put this on facebook and a friend wrote "Do not attempt Mad Max stunts"

Buster Keaton

Recently I emailed a mate of mine a joke and he didn't think it was funny. He loves slapstick and physical humour so I replied saying next time I'll send a clip of a bloke walking down the street carrying a ladder, knocking people over - he'd laugh at that. Soon after I sent him something else and again he didn't find it funny either so I went on Youtube to try and find a clip of a guy carrying a ladder down the street. Couldn't find one but ended up finding some Buster Keaton clips. Watched a bunch of them plus a doco and was pretty blown away by the whole thing.

First of all, the stunts he was doing were amazing, not to mention how dangerous they were. They also had this lovely old world feel that was just really charming. His life too was amazing .. massive ups and massive downs.

Here's a clip of some of his stuff. It doesn't include the one he does where he's running down a hill with all these rocks and boulders running down the hill around him, which is a surprise. Still good tho.

And here are the jokes I sent my mate. I agree, the 2nd one isn't that good but I still think the first one is class. I dunno who the artist is but it's genius and I feel bad I can't give him credit.
